Sweden’s new political unity to drive nuclear power investments

Vattenfall Sweden S New Political Unity To Drive Nuclear Power Investments

During the lasts months, Sweden has witnessed a remarkable shift in nuclear energy policy, with broad political consensus and commitment to substantial industrial investments. Swedish energy policy is now characterized by a broad political unity around nuclear power – opening substantial new market opportunities for ISEC.

On August 1, 2025, a new law on state support for nuclear investments came into effect. The target is clear: At least 2,500 MW of new nuclear capacity must be in place by 2035. And on September 19, the Swedish Government presented the 2026 budget proposal including a clear positioning on investments in nuclear new build.

Noteworthy is that the opposition party Social Democrats recently opened up to state support for new nuclear power. This creates unprecedented cross-block cooperation and a new plat form to discuss future decisions.

Swedish state-owned energy company Vattenfall announced plans for 1,500 MW nuclear capacity at the Ringhals nuclear power plant in south of Sweden, using small modular reactors and a first reactor targeted for 2035. With plans to add another 1,000 MW in a second phase.

The government views expanded nuclear power as the single most important measure for Sweden to reduce its national emissions through electrification. With total investments of SEK 400 billion required to build 4,000-6,000 MW of nuclear capacity, this represents one of the most significant industrial undertakings in the Sweden’s history.

A combination of political consensus, state backing, and concrete project development signals a fundamental transformation in how Sweden approaches its energy future.

For ISEC, this is a positive outlook as it reassures the future demand for secure and efficient monitoring and surveillance in the Swedish nuclear market. ISEC is determined to play a vital role in this exciting new era.
